Periods and Swimming: There's No Need to Skip the Pool

Updated: Aug 27

For our female swimmers and parents of female swimmers.

It's a common misconception that women and girls need to avoid swimming during their periods. However, this outdated notion is simply untrue. There's no reason menstruation should prevent anyone from enjoying the water, whether for exercise, sport, or leisure.

We are unable to provide special leave or accommodations for students who are on their periods. Menstruation is a normal, healthy bodily function - not an illness or disability. Expecting people to miss out on activities like swimming simply because they're having their period is unfair and outdated.

Contrary to myth, swimming while on your period is not unhygienic. Pool water already contains traces of sweat, skin cells, and even small amounts of urine - it's the job of chlorine and other disinfectants to make sure the water remains safe for swimming. A little menstrual blood isn't going to compromise pool cleanliness.

In fact, exercising during your period can actually help alleviate cramps and other menstrual discomfort. The endorphins released during physical activity like swimming can provide welcome relief.

We also wouldn't expect female athletes or coaches to stop training or competing for a week each month due to their periods. Professional sportswomen manage their flow effectively using a variety of feminine care products.

Tampons and menstrual cups are designed to be worn during physical activities, creating an effective internal barrier against leakage. These insertable products are comfortable, discreet, and allow for full freedom of movement in the water.

For an extra layer of protection, period swimwear made with absorbent, quick-drying fabrics offers additional security and confidence. These specialized swimsuits and bottoms have built-in liners to prevent any accidents or embarrassing moments.

And for students who may feel self-conscious, keeping a dark-colored towel on hand can provide a convenient cover-up when exiting the pool. The towel can be wrapped around the waist as an added safeguard, just in case.

So the next time you have your period, don't let it stop you from enjoying the pool. With the right feminine care products and a bit of preparedness, you can swim, splash, and exercise worry-free. Your period is nothing to be ashamed of - embrace it, and continue living your active, healthy life.
